This Sunday our readings surround water but the deep focus in the third week of Lent is belief that God and His son, Jesus, are who we think they are.
First we have Moses striking a stone, at God's command, making water spew forth. This water saved the Israelites following him through the desert. This convinced them that Moses did know God and that he was watching out for them.
Then we have Jesus, resting near a well and asking a Samaritan woman to give him some water. You see, Jews did not talk to or associate in any way with Samaritans - let alone a woman. During their conversation, Jesus convinced her that he was the Messiah. He stayed and talked to the people of that small community for several days.
Then from the New Testament comes that proof to end all proofs. Paul asks the Romans if they could imagine someone dying for a good and honorable person or their best friend. Then he asks if they could imagine someone dying for an evil person, their enemy or a sinner.
