ROLL?

How do you roll?

Be honest.  Have you ever said while in a car, "Roll down your window."

Why do we do that?  Where is rolling involved?  To lower or raise a car window, we press or pull a lever.  When I was young, we rotated a handle.  From where does this roll business come?

How about this one.  "Crack your window."  Crack?!

You can crack a piece of glass but you can't roll one.  The things we say are funny.
