On this date in 1947, Thor Heyerdahl set sail out from Peru on a large hand-built raft he called the Kon-Tiki. He had a crew of five and was attempting to prove ancient peoples could have sailed the 5000 miles across the South Pacific from Asia to populate South America.
Heyerdahl, a Norwegian adventurer, wrote a book from the log of the 101-day trip which he called The Kon-Tiki Expedition. I read a translated version of this book in high school and it was one that left an indelible impression on me. He also penned a book called Aku-Aku about a later expedition to Easter Island which I also read. Both books were international best sellers.
Try 'em, you'll like 'em.
