STARS

Which star is closest to Earth?  The one we call the Sun, of course.

(Why is it THE Sun?  Why not just Sun?  We don't call planets The Mars or The Jupiter.  What does Sun think it is, Ohio State University?  That makes me sick every time I hear it:  The Ohio State University. Yuck!)

Anyway, the Sun is a star.  It is our star.   All those stars you see at night are just like our Sun.  Our Sun and the solar system in which we belong are part of the Milky Way Galaxy.  In this galaxy, it is estimated there are 100 to 400 billion stars;  100 to 400 billion stars just like our Sun are in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Get this:  there are more than 100 billion galaxies out there.  That's 100 billion galaxies each containing between 10 billion and 100 trillion stars similar to our Sun.  That's a lot.  I'm just going to think about this for awhile.  (If I were to multiply this out there would be too many zeros to fit on one page.)  WOW!
