On this date in 1973, one of the great athletes of my time won the Kentucky Derby in the record time of 1 minute 59 and 2/5 seconds.  Secretariat's run through the triple crown of racing was a very exciting time.  I loved that horse.

On this date in 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space.  He was squeezed into a little capsule that sat atop a rocket and was blasted into suborbital outer space.  The capsule, called Freedom 7,  splashed down into the Atlantic Ocean and one of our Navy ships scooped him out.  He became a national hero and rightly so.  That man had some guts.  It was also a very exciting time.
