RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

6/23/2014

JUNE 23

On this date in 1917, one of the strangest games in major league baseball history occurred.  The Boston Red Sox were entertaining the Washington Senators in the first game of a double header in Fenway Park. Pitching for the Sox was none other than Babe Ruth.

The first batter Ruth faced walked.  The Babe got enraged at the umpire.  In the ensuing argument both Ruth and his catcher were ejected.  The Babe punched the umpire before he left the field.  The Red Sox brought in Ernie Shore to take over the pitching duties.

The runner that Ruth had walked attempted to steal and was thrown out at second by the new catcher. Ernie Shore went on to retire the next 26 batters in a row - for a rare relief no-hitter.

...never happened before and never will again.
