Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. It is rooted in Jewish tradition and gets its name as the fiftieth day after Passover. According to the Bible, God had ordered the Jews to give thanks and to make offerings of new grain at this time. They call the day Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks.
In Christian tradition, Pentecost is fifty days after Easter and ten days after Christ ascended into heaven. It commemorates the Holy Spirit's coming to his disciples and their infusion with the courage to go out and preach what Jesus had taught them. It thus marks the birth of the Christian church.
For us, we should be reminded that we are not only called to follow the teachings of Jesus but to pass them on to others - especially our children.
