Bats are mammals (not birds). The only mammals that really fly. You and I are mammals; whales are mammals and so are all creatures that suckle their young - that eliminates birds, insects, fish and reptiles;
egg layers, all.
There are well over 1,000 different types of bats - the largest has a wing span over five feet and the smallest with a wing span under six inches. Try to avoid that big one.
Bats are our friends. They eat lots of insects and keep that population under control.
The bats we usually see are called little brown bats (quite a technical name). They feed for a couple hours after dusk and again before dawn. During the day, they roost under roofs, in attics or under rock ledges.
