On this date in 1987, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) repealed the fairness doctrine it had established in 1949. Understand that the FCC is the government entity that controls the airwaves and licenses all broadcast companies.
The fairness doctrine was a rule that every TV and radio station had to provide some programming about controversial social and political issues and had to include contrasting sides to every commentary. There was no such thing as one-sided broadcasting like you see on MSNBC or Fox News. The major networks were not allowed to only give their liberal slant on all news stories.
Freedom ruled.
