I've settled upon the reason we have grandparents (besides just being old and refusing to die). The purpose of grandparents is to prepare grandchildren for the gruesome truth that some day their parents will become addled, decrepit and then die. Children without grandparents are often missing this life lesson. Too bad. Those kids aren't prepared for reality.
