On this date in 1914, Martha died. Martha was a passenger pigeon and she died at the Cincinnati Zoo. Martha was the very last passenger pigeon - - - they are extinct.
Passenger pigeons were once the most abundant bird in North America and possibly the world. In the 19th century huge flocks covered American and Canadian skies. The population was decimated as its habitats were replaced by cities and highways. In addition, huge number were killed for food. Its sad. We will never see one.
