When I was a kid, power lawn mowers were not yet in residential use. Everything was done by manually pushed or pulled reel-type mowers. I never used a power mower until 1968 (23 years-old).
Briggs & Stratton introduced the aluminum block small gas engine in 1953 which made power mowing feasible. The first ones were put on reel-type mowers. Gasoline engine driven rotary mowers came into popular use in the early 1960's.
If you've never pushed a reel-type lawn mower, then you probably have never had a soda at the counter in a 5 & 10 cent store. You don't know what you are missing.
