On this date in 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed sending rush hour traffic into the river and 46 people to their death.  The Silver Bridge spanned the Ohio River from Point Pleasant, West Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio.

The bridge was a suspension type structure that was completed in 1928.  Its failure was attributed to poor maintenance.  The long term outcome was much more stringent requirements for bridge construction and testing in the United States.
