SUNDAY SERVICE

Today is the third Sunday of Advent.  This week another story about John the Baptist.  He was cornered by the local priests and levites who asked just who he was.  His only answer was, "I am the voice of one crying out in the desert 'make straight the way of the Lord'."

Why the desert?  He wasn't in the desert when they were talking to him.

I think the desert was just an example, a metaphor for a place where nothing much grows - nothing much is good - nothing much is there to help us survive.  He was telling them that without the Lord they all were living in a desert.  To 'make straight' is of course to make the path easier.
