On this date in 1775, 240 years ago today, Patrick Henry delivered a speech to the Virginia State House of Burgesses at St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond. In it, he vehemently encouraged Virginia to send troops and join the fight in a revolt against England. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, both future Presidents, were in the audience.

enumerates the evil that the English government was imposing on this colony and it ends with this famous line: "Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
