Everyone I know is deeply involved in the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament. The talk of brackets and buzzer beaters and Cinderellas is constantly in the air. Well, I've given this a lot of thought in these many years I've been around and I've come to one major conclusion. The NCAA is either directionally-challenged or regionally biased. Here's my proof.
What happened to 'North'? Doesn't anyone ever question why they have brackets named 'Midwest', 'South', 'East' and 'West'? It's ridiculous! What have they got against the North? The directional names mean so little they might as well call them A, B, C and D.
To top off their idiocy, they sent half of the teams in the 'West' region to play in Jacksonville, Florida; some teams in the 'East' and 'South' regions had to play in Seattle, Washington; some of the 'South' teams had to play in Portland, Oregon. Get out your maps, boys!
Their answer to all this will be that they create equality of competition by shifting teams around the country. Says who? I say let the regions fight it out and send their best team to play in the final four. Too bad there is very little good basketball in the 'West'. Who is with me on this?
Do they offer map reading in college these days?
