On this date in 1959, the Barbie Doll was introduced by Mattel at an international toy fair in New York City.  I was in the 8th grade at the time and really wasn't interested.

The first package touted the doll as a teen age fashion model.  The doll's complete name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

Barbie's boyfriend (off and on) since 1961 is Ken - full name Ken Carson.  Barbie has the following friends and family members:  Skipper (sister), the twins Tutti and Todd (sister and brother), Francie (cousin), Blaine Gordon (Barbie's boyfriend when she broke up with Ken for a while), Nikki (current friend), Teresa (Barbie's best friend), ... I'm done.  Barbie has dozens and dozens of friends and family.  I had no idea.

It may interest you to know, that the first versions of Barbie's doll house came with a step-on bathroom scale that read 110 lbs.  In recent years, Mattel has widened Barbie's waist to ease some of their critics who complained about setting unrealistic goals for young girls.
