RIOTS

It may come as a surprise to you that Cincinnati has been a center of riots since it's founding in 1788.  It has.

In 1792, settlers fought with soldiers.  In 1829, 1836 and in 1841, African Americans fought with whites.  In 1853, Germans fought with Italians.  In 1855, Germans fought with African Americans.

In 1884, we had the Courthouse Riots - citizens protesting a judicial verdict.  Over fifty men died in this skirmish.

In 1967, African Americans rioted in the Avondale community of Cincinnati over the conviction of black man and then his brother for loitering when he protested.  The National Guard was brought in.  One died and over 400 were arrested.  A federal commission reported that the root cause was unequal enforcement of the law in black neighborhoods.  A year later, rioting again broke out in this neighborhood after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Two people were killed.

In 2001, rioting broke out in the Over-the-Rhine area after the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a policeman.  The disturbance went on for three days.  These were the largest urban riots in the U.S. since the Los Angeles riots brought on by the arrest of Rodney King in 1992.

Baltimore is not alone.
