Interesting that we say someone is running for public office. Elections are always about running - never jogging or walking or crawling - never just trying out or auditioning.
These days, those running for president start running about 18 months before the election. That's about 12 months before the primary elections begin. A lot of running, I'd say. And, why do they do start so early? Money, of course.
If you asked them, they would say they want to become known by the electorate. What they really want to do is sop up some of the money that big time donors have allotted for the primaries before others do. The amount of money out there is limited so you better get it before your competitors get it. Why? It takes huge amounts of money to run - especially this long a race.
So what happens? The candidates from each party spend 12 months or more denigrating each other. This would lead one to think that staying out of the race until the last minute would be the wise choice. You would have less money to start but would be less scathed by criticism. I'm thinking that we might see that this year. Watch out for a late candidate from either or each party.
