The first really successful step away from fossil fuel cars was the hybrid - part electric battery driven motor and part gas engine. The engine recharges the batteries. Toyota led the way in that regard. Less gas used = less CO2 emitted. A little better!
Tesla Motors is pushing an all-electric auto. Batteries are getting better and better. It works but its is expensive and the range seems risky because the batteries need to be recharged. Charging stations are needed for long hauls. Of course, electricity is generated in big power plants which sometimes use coal (another fossil fuel). A little better!
The next big step you will see is the hydrogen fuel cell powered car. Toyota thinks they have it perfected now. They will start selling them in the U.S. in the next few years. Hydrogen comes from air and water. Hydrogen fueling stations will have to be set up (California will be first). Air and water come out the exhaust pipe. Good!
What's next? I look for this trend to come to homes. I expect that more homes will be hybrid in the near future. In the distant future, we should see batteries and solar cells taking over for much of our electric needs. Beyond that, I see no reason that we shouldn't have homes powered by hydrogen, wind and the sun. When this time comes, telephone poles and unsightly wires will be eliminated. It's all inevitable.
