SURROGATE

You've heard of a surrogate.  Usually, these days, we hear it with "mother."  The definition of the word is more broadly one that takes the place of another.

However you feel about surrogate mothers aside, you probably have used them yourself.  You see, a coach or a teacher is a surrogate.  They take your place to do the coaching or teaching of your child.  Like a surrogate mother, they are entrusted with your most precious possession.

If we think of coaches and teachers as our surrogates, and I think we should, we must treat them with the respect that we would expect.  Parents are authority figures - and coaches and teachers are also.  We must teach our children to respect them and their rules.  They must obey their authority - right or wrong.  We all make mistakes.  Never undermine their authority.

Police are the ultimate authority figures.  If we don't teach our children to respect coaches and teachers and their rules, we can't expect them to respect the police and the rule of  law.   Respect for authority starts in the home.
