BIID

Some people are afflicted with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID).   It is a psychological problem that causes a person to desire to have a limb or two cut off.  Gruesome, isn't it.  Sufferers either think they would rather be an amputee or, sometimes, that one or more of their limbs is not really theirs.

These people eventually go to a doctor and ask for an operation to remove the unwanted arm or leg. Doctors, of course, are aware of this disorder and are schooled on how to treat such a patient.  No doctor, I dare say, would ever remove a healthy limb.  Intense psychiatric help is the answer.

Now comes a man who thinks he would like to have his genitals removed.  He feels he would rather be a woman.  Is he sent to the psychiatrist or the surgeon?  Is he brave or does he have a really big problem?   Do we praise him for his courage or have sympathy for one being afflicted with a terrible psychological disorder?
