On this date in 1969 (Eastern Standard Time), NASA's Apollo 11 mission landed American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the Moon in the area known as the Sea of Tranquility. Six hours later, Commander Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the Moon. It was televised live and I was watching.
The spaceship was a two part vessel. Michael Collins, the third member of the crew, continued to pilot the command module in orbit while Aldrin piloted the lunar module to the Moon's surface and back. The men spent only one day on the Lunar surface and the entire mission lasted a little over eight days.
