RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

JULY 6

On this date in 1933, the very first Major League Baseball All-Star game was played.  The American League beat the Nationals 4-2 at Comiskey Park on Chicago's south side.

The Reds had only one player on the National League team, Chick Hafey started in left field.  He batted clean-up.  On the American League team, Babe Ruth batted third and Lou Gehrig batted fourth.  Chick got the first hit ever in an All-Star game.  In 1971, he was named by the veterans committee to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I'm surprised you never heard of Chick.

And now the rest of the story.  Hafey played most of his career, seven years, with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds lured him here by offering more money.  Sadly, he developed a sinus condition in the Ohio valley and his statistics waned during his four year stay.
