LITTLE KNOWN FACTS

BATS!!!  Did you know that bats are more like you than birds are?  Bats are mammals.  Birds are aves (which means birds, doh!).  Mammals are those creatures whose brain controls their body temperature, whose mothers nurse their young, and who have hair.  (Note:  even though I lost my hair I'm still a mammal)
Now you see,  you may have thought bats were just like birds but they are certainly not.

Bats are maybe the most beneficial creature we have on earth.  They literally eat tons of bugs every day - yes, tons.  They shouldn't scare you.  By far, most bats just eat insects - some actually just eat vegetation and others aid in plant pollination. Yes, there are some blood suckers but you'll never see them around here - even if you did, they get by on about a teaspoon full of blood a day (I bleed that much by accident every day).

Were you wondering why bats sleep upside down? ... why they live in caves or the underside of rocks and limbs and eaves?  Here's the scoop.  They can't take off.  Even though they are great flyers, they can't take off.  You see, their wings are built like our shoulders, arms and hands.  They don't have enough muscle to take off from an upright position like birds and can't run like ducks sometimes do.  So, they hang upside down and when they want to fly, they drop to get themselves going.  They live in caves, etc. to protect themselves from their greatest predators - eagles, hawks and other birds of prey.

Blind as a bat???  No way - bats have very good eyes but they also have a system of seeing called echolocation - they send out a noise that bounces off of objects and locates the world for them.

The down side.  Bats are very family oriented.  They live in large groups and huddle together closely each day.  This causes them to quickly spread from one to another whatever bacteria, virus and other infestations any might come in contact with.

Okay!  Now you know more about bats than you did yesterday and most of it is true.
