On this date in 1989, Cincinnati Reds manager Peter Edward Rose accepted from Major League Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti a permanent banishment to the ineligible list for gambling on baseball games while still a player. He remains on that list to this day. I don't think I have to expound on the facts of the case or what has happened in the last 26 years.
I will say that I believe Pete will NEVER be given full pardon by baseball . . . but it may allow him some increased participation. The Hall of Fame is a completely separate matter. My guess is there are too many hard line voters who will never vote for him.
