On this date in 1921, the first Miss America Pageant began. It was a two-day event held in Atlantic City. The next day, Margaret Gorman, age 16, was crowned the Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America.
Some interesting things. *Mary Katherine Campbell of Ohio won two years in a row and came in first runner-up the following year (1924). After that they changed the rules so that you could win only once. *The event was first televised in 1955. *Vanessa Williams, the first black winner, resigned the following July when nude photos of her appeared in Penthouse Magazine. Tsk! Tsk!
The most famous winners (that I know) are: Mary Ann Mobley an actress in Different Strokes (1958) Phyllis George a sportscaster (1971), Vanessa Williams a singer/actress (1984) and Gretchen Carlson of FOX News (1988).
It surprises me that this silliness still goes on.
