On this date in 1977, a Somali man named Ali Maow Maalin, was diagnosed with small pox. There have been no natural cases of the disease since that date.
Maalin recovered from his mild case of small pox and died just two years ago of malaria. He spent his life in Africa advocating for vaccinations.
The eradication of small pox was a great feat for the medical profession. It proved that vaccinations work. Don't hesitate to get vaccinated.
