RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

APRIL 11

On this date in 1976, 40 years ago, Steve Wozniak released his hand-made Apple 1 computer.  His partner, Steve Jobs, sold his VW bus to finance the manufacture.  The idea of a "complete" personal computer was fairly new.  Only kits you put together yourself were available at the time.

From computer club demonstrations, they received an order for fifty from one store in California.  Jobs sold them for $500 each and they put them into production with borrowed money for parts.

In July, they went on sale to the public for $666.66 each.    These units were sold without a case or power transformer or power switch;  no keyboard;  no video display.  The buyer had to supply these parts. Basically, all they were selling was a circuit board.

What a story Apple Inc. is.   Today, their corporate revenue is something like $235 billion per year.
