RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

APRIL 25

On this date in 1945, a number of significant things happened relative to World War II.  The war was winding down - the end was in sight.

This day, the German army in Italy retreated back across it's northern border.  Italy was liberated. Benito Mussolini, the fascist president who sided with Hitler, was captured.  Today is a public holiday in Italy.

This day, the last of the German army retreated out of Finland.  The war was over in the Lapland area.

This day, United States troops from the east and Soviet troops from the west, met at the Elbe river, effectively dividing the German army in two.  It may be the last time these two armies celebrated together.  The war in Europe was only a few weeks from ending and the 'cold war' was just beginning.

Oh yes, my mother was seven months pregnant with me.
*O*
