On this date in 1945, Heinrich Himmler committed suicide after being captured by Allied Forces at the end of World War II.  Himmler was the head of the Schutzstaffel - commonly called the SS.  The SS was Hitler's personal police force.  They were in charge of surveillance and security.  Mostly they were involved with terror and fear.  The SS is basically responsible for racial policies which led to the attempted extermination of the Jewish population.  The SS ran the concentration camps.

Suicide was too good for him.
