No softball for me last night. I went to a commencement ceremony. Don't get me started on that again.
Congratulations, Madeline.
Did you watch the National Spelling Bee on TV last night. It ended in a tie again. One of the winners was a fifth grader. All of the other final ten contestants were seventh and eighth graders.
The words they have to spell now are ridiculous. To demonstrate this, I have looked up the final or winning words since they started this contest in 1925. It's amazing what has happened. Here are some representative final words from contests past.
1925 - gladiolus
1930 - fracas
1935 - intelligible
1940 - therapy
1946 - semaphore
1950 - meticulosity
1955 - crustaceology
1960 - eudaemonic
1965 - eczema
1970 - croissant
1975 - incisor
1980 - elucubrate
1985 - milieu
1990 - fibranne
1995 - xanthosis
2000 - demarche
2005 - appoggiatura
2010 - stromuhr
2015 - scherenschnitte
Of this list of 19 words, my spell check thinks 10 are not words or that I have spelled them incorrectly - every one since 1990. I haven't. What's the point in all this?
