Garbage - think about it.
When I was a kid, we didn't have plastic garbage bags . . . we didn't have plastic garbage cans . . . we didn't have sink disposals. Garbage cans were metal. We didn't keep one in the kitchen, Kitchen waste was taken right out to the cans outside.
At least we didn't have much glass to dispose of. Glass was recycled - so to speak. Glass bottles had a value. They were taken back to the store for a refund. Besides beer and pop, most drinks and other liquids came in metal cans.
We had one other type of waste to take care of that you don't have today. In the Winter, we had to throw out the ashes from the coal furnace. If we had a lot of snow, you could throw the ashes on the street so cars wouldn't slide around. There was no snow removal.
One positive, the garbage collectors came to the back of our house to get the garbage. We didn't have to carry it out to the street. Oh! The good old days.
