RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

OKAY, HOW ABOUT A LITTLE TONGUE?

We talked about our giraffe friends yesterday and how they have the same number of neck bones as we do.  What do you think about their tongues?

Well, their tongues are about 18" long and they are prehensile (that means they can grasp things with them).  What would you do with an 18" tongue?    They use them to grab fruit off of trees and they whack flies with them. Oh, they clean their noses with them, too.  Yuk!  What talented tongues.

Like almost all mammals, giraffes exhibit sexual dimorphism.  That means that males are generally larger than females.  Guess what animal exhibits reverse sexual dimorphism - our friends the owls. Most female owls are slightly larger than the males.

Now, you've learned a new word and some trivia you will probably never use.  Remember me.
