BALDWIN & NORTHERN SPY

No, these are not an actor and a Canadian undercover agent.  Baldwin and Northern Spy are two of the four varieties the U.S. Postal Service chose to use in 2013 when issuing a set of stamps commemorating the apple.  The other two were Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.

The Baldwin is a bright red Winter apple grown in New England.  It is rather small and used mostly to make apple cider.  The Northern Spy is also grown in the northeast USA.  It is a late maturing apple with thin skin and a high vitamin C content.  It is used mostly for pies and other desserts.

By the way, my dear wife, through her brother Bill, is related by marriage to Johnny Appleseed.  Yes, Barbara claims that Johnny (Chapman) dropped one of his seeds on her family tree.

Another "by the way" . . . I think that kids today would be better off if they had more apples and less Apples.
