When I was a kid, my parents were Democrats. The community in which we lived was comprised of mostly Democrats. The local elected officials were all Democrats. My mother worked at the polls as a Democrat judge. My father was put on local government committees after he retired by Democrats.
I can remember my dad telling me that on the federal level there was not a whole lot different between a Democrat and a Republican except for this. When the Democrats were in charge the economy was good but we could be at war. When the Republicans were in charge, we were not likely to go to war but the economy would be poor. That was his simple 1950's explanation. It came from his history growing up during the Great Depression under Republicans and going into Wold War II under a Democrat.
It's not that simple.
I've never voted for a Democrat in my life.
