A genetic mutation in horses occurring about 900 AD caused them to walk and run smoothly. This allowed men to ride them comfortably for the first time. Horses were not generally ridden before this time. Breeders used this mutated stock to interbreed with others and it spread around the world.
Genetic mutations are freaks of nature. Freaks are not always bad - just different . . . and sometimes, different is better.
