RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

MIME

There was a period in the not-too-distant past that miming was in vogue.  Miming is an art form in which an entertainer puts on a show without ever making a sound.  Don't know that I saw too much of it in the Cincinnati area.

Twice I came upon mimes and it puzzled me both times.  I distinctly remember being in the Los Angeles area and walking down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.  We were doing some window shopping and looking for a place to eat lunch.  Outside the restaurant we chose was a statue . . . well, it looked like a statue.  It was a guy sprayed with silver paint from head to toe who stood motionless until someone got near him.  Yikes!  At another place on the same street, two people were dressed as robots and doing the herky-jerky robot movements we are familiar with.  At both spots there were tip jars on the sidewalk.

Another run-in I had with a mime took place in Sydney, Australia.  One day, we were walking along the large promenade known as the Circular Quay surrounding Sydney Harbor.   A mischievous mime was walking along making fun of people behind their backs.  He would walk past someone, then turn and follow them very closely mimicking whatever they did.  If they turned to see who was there, he would turn away quickly with an innocent look.  He was actually putting on a show for all those who were watching and aware what he was and what he was doing.  It was great.

Anyone seen a mime lately?  Is there anyone you wish would turn into a mime?
