RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

9/05/2016

SEPTEMBER 5

On this date in 1977, NASA launched a space probe they called Voyager I.  The purpose of the probe was to study the outer solar system. The key parts of it's mission were to flyby Jupiter, Saturn and Saturn's moon, Titan, and send back information.  (Titan is the largest of the 62 moons that Saturn has outside of the debris making up it's rings.  Titan is larger than the planet Mercury.)

Well, Voyager I did it's job and is still doing it.  It currently is the one satellite that is furthest from Earth and the only object to travel into the outer heliosphere (the limits of our galaxy beyond all planets).  What's more, it still is taking instructions from NASA and doing it's job. NASA expects Voyager to continue sending back information about outer space through 2025 when it's power cells should run out of energy.

Amazing, isn't it? . . . thirty-nine years ago today.

On this date in 1998, something more amazing happened.  Andrew Sizer was born.  He gets more amazing every day . . . eighteen years ago today.  Wish him a happy birthday.
