1869 - A SPECIAL YEAR

1869 was the year the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first professional baseball team.  A seminal year for all locals.  But, an event even more important to some also happened that year.  The first college football game (American football) was played.

The game was played between Rutgers College (now Rutgers University) and The College of New Jersey (later the name was changed to Princeton University).   At the time, Rutgers players were known as the "Queensmen" (now the Scarlet Knights).  Princeton was and still is the Tigers.  They were the only schools with teams.  They played a two game schedule.  Each team won one game so the season ended in a tie.  They shared the national championship.

Well, that game wasn't much like American football of today.  The ball was round and you were not allowed to pass or run with it.  Oh yeah, each team had 25 men on the field at any one time.  I swear, they called it football.  Sounds like a lot of kicking went on.  Princeton won the first game 6-4.

The first college football game played with eleven players on a side and which allowed running with the ball (no longer a round ball) took place in 1875 between Harvard and Tufts.  Passing wasn't allowed for a number of years later but tackling had become a integral part of the game.  Harvard, who played a four (4) game schedule, won that game and the national championship.

College football has come a long way.  USA Today ran an article last week enumerating what college football coaches are making this year.   Note that there are 128 schools competing in Division 1 (FBS) football and nine (9) would not reveal salaries.  Sit down!  Seventy-two (72) of the coaches make over $1 million a year.  Twenty (20) make over $4 million per year topped by Jim Harbaugh at Michigan making over $9 million.   Big schools have assistants making over a half million.

The economy may not be what it should be but, if you've got the right job, it ain't all that bad.  Let's see, "What did I make those 10 years I coached football?"
