WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, there was no such thing in my neighborhood as a 'finished basement'.  All the houses were built with basements - where else would you put a coal furnace and coal bins?   The neighborhood was built in the 1920's.  Absolutely none had a 'finished basement'.

Oh! We were considering painting the concrete floor but we never did.  It was just a cold, damp, scary place as I remember it.  It was just a place to stoke the furnace, wash the clothes, can some vegetables and store our junk.
