RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

DECEMBER 12

On this date in 1917, a Catholic priest, Father Ed Flanagan, founded what is now called Boys Town.  It was an orphanage for boys in Omaha, Nebraska with new juvenile care methods differing from other orphanages of the time.  It's aim was social preparation for manhood.  It's still there in Nebraska and now has 12 regional headquarters located around the country.

Father Flanagan's project was made famous in 1938 with the hit motion picture "Boys Town" starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney.  The logo for Boys Town is a boy carrying another boy on his back saying,"He ain't heavy, Father, he's my brother."   That logo prompted a song in the 1960's by the British rock group The Hollies and covered by many.  Here is a great version.
