On this date in 1968, the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong launched what has been called their Tet Offensive. Tet is the Vietnamese word for new year. Eastern countries use a lunar calendar so that the date varies each year relative to our calendar. This date that year marked the lunar new year. (This year the lunar new year was last Saturday.)
The Tet Offensive was a shock to the South Vietnamese, American and allied armies. Attacks took place in many parts of the country. It put the North on the offensive and the South back on it's heals. It was a real 'no-turning-back-point' in the war. We were in it up to our knees. More soldiers were drafted and more body bags were ordered.
Thank God I had already returned to the States.
