RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SUNDAY SERVICE

This weekend at Catholic mass you will hear a well-known piece of Matthew's Gospel.  The writer relates what has come to be known as the 'Sermon on the Mount' over three chapters.  That sermon, which Jesus preached in Galilee early in his ministry, includes The Lord's Prayer and the part we hear today, the Beatitudes.

The Beatitudes are beautiful - for me they represent the upside-down world that Jesus paints.  They tell us that our good deeds and our basic goodness will be rewarded.  They also say, without putting it into words, that doing 'great in the eyes of the world' brings no reward in heaven.

Here is who Jesus preached would receive rewards;  the poor, the sad, the meek, the righteous, the merciful, the clean of heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted, those who are insulted or lied about, and finally, those that are joyful.

Those not on this list are receiving rewards in the world.  Our time in the world is short compared to eternity.  Choose wisely.
