William Henry Harrison was the ninth President of the United States. He hailed from Ohio. His father, Benjamin Harrison V, was a Founding Father of our country, signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Virginia.
William was a military officer by profession and though born in Virginia, he settled in Ohio after serving heroically in the War of 1812. He lived in North Bend, Ohio and married Anna Symmes there. North Bend is right on the Ohio River on the west side of Cincinnati.
Harrison served as a U.S. Representative and a Senator from Ohio before running for President. He was elected President in 1840 and took office on March 4, 1841. At 68, he was the oldest person to be elected to the office prior to Ronald Reagan 140 years later. Sadly, he contracted pneumonia just three weeks after inauguration and died on April 4. His vice-president, John Tyler, took over for the remainder of the four years.
Another star from Cincinnati's past.
