On this date in 624 AD, the Battle of Badr took place according to Muslim literature. The Muslims from Medina, led by Muhammad, fought and defeated the Quraish from Mecca in a tribal skirmish that many believe was a defining moment in the establishment of the religion of Islam. Medina and Mecca are cities in what we now call Saudi Arabia.
Muslims believe they were aided in the battle by Angels sent from Heaven by Allah. Muhammad's victory gave him the status as the powerful leader Islam and brought many followers to him.
While you might think of a great army involved in the battle noted above, the total strength of Muhammad's forces was 313 men, 2 horses and 70 camels. Just one thousand, three hundred, ninety-three years ago today.
