On this date in 1760, they had a fire in Boston. I mean a real fire. It's not famous like the Great Chicago fire which happened over a hundred years later (1871) but it was almost as devastating.
The fire started about 2 a.m. in a home in the downtown area. It spread toward the ocean and destroyed 349 buildings, several ships in the harbor and left thousands homeless. It is called the Great Boston Fire of 1760, They had to put the date on it because they had an even bigger fire in downtown Boston in 1872. That fire destroyed about 776 buildings. I think it was time to pay attention to fire prevention.
The City of Cincinnati had the oldest paid professional fire department in the country - established in 1853.
