This weekend at Mass in Catholic Churches, you will hear John's account of Jesus' meeting the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. Samaritans were of a different tribe than Jesus. They were from the line of Jacob's son Joseph, while Jesus was from the family of David. Normally, the two tribes were not friendly to each other. So, it was a shock to her and others that Jesus was even talking to her. It kind of sounds like an American Christian and a Muslim woman in a burka meeting on the street corner; you wouldn't expect much conversation to go on.
In the Gospel, Jesus amazed the woman with his knowledge of her past. Then he hit her up with some talk of water which will quench one's thirst forever. Pretty heady stuff. Of course, the water Jesus was talking about was the water of Baptism. Jesus converted many Samaritans in the days that followed.
Don't be the one to avoid talking to strangers. Be a good example. They will know you are a Christian by your love. It's catching.
