When I was a kid, this was a National Holiday - in our house. My dad was very proud of his Irish heritage. He belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
It is an Irish Catholic fraternal organization founded in 1836. You must prove you have Irish ancestry. It's original purpose was to provide protection for Catholic Churches and to aid/assist Irish immigrants. Today it is mostly beer-friendly fraternal.
