RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

APRIL 17

On this date in 1907, Ellis Island immigration station processed 11,747 people - more than any other date - ever.   Between 1905 and 1914, the station accepted on average about 1 million immigrants per year - about 5,000 immigrants per day were reviewed there.

In 1924, a new immigration act was passed by the U.S. Congress which changed and restricted immigration.  Prospective immigrants were then being vetted by our foreign embassies except for war refugees who still were processed at Ellis Island.

Today, 30 to 40 percent of U.S. citizens, over 100 million people, have ancestors who passed through Ellis Island as immigrants.  Mine did.
